COLONY: Interactive website takes you inside the Los Angeles bloc

If you have not yet visited the ColonyTV.com website, you are missing out on some awesome interactive features.  The site takes you inside the Los Angeles bloc and allows you to set up your own security profile.  But do not stop there.
There’s much more!  You will have the opportunity to choose your side as a Collaborator or member of the Resistance movement.  Changing loyalties makes you a double agent.  Switching allegiances also allows you to unlock classified intel from both sides.  Earn achievements by completing missions and other interactions with the site.
One of the most insightful features is the map of locations throughout the bloc.  You can explore areas in the Green Zone as well as the Flats and learn about characters in those areas.  Not all locations on the map are available yet depending on which episodes have aired.  So check back regularly for new locations and available features. And if you are leaning toward the Resistance, be sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled for secret Geronimo broadcasts!
All the intel you unlock is stored in your personal Dossier for reference. And, of course, you earn increasing rank as you progress through the site as well.  Be on the lookout for contests you can enter and new videos about your favorite new show, COLONY.
Check out a few snapshots from the website below and then log in for your own experience!

COLONY: How would fans respond to the occupation?

In the new series COLONY from USA Network, the Los Angeles area is now under a mysterious state of occupation. The ColonyTV website gives stories of the arrival of the new regime. There are tales of mayhem, separation of families, and threats of violence.
After the initial shock, “Colonists” begin their new lives with new rules and far fewer privileges. Some join a Resistance movement. Others enlist in the new “Red Hat” militia and enforce the laws of the Transitional Authority. Some keep their heads down and hope it all blows over sooner rather than later. Perhaps some try to play more than one side.
So, how would I respond? How would YOU respond? It’s certainly easier to envision how I would hope I would respond rather than have to consider my actual fears.
However, it is these questions that make said story so engaging. This story makes you think outside of your safety net and consider your own strengths and weaknesses.

Once again, I have turned to the growing number of COLONY fans to find out their thoughts on the best way to navigate the travails facing our survivors on screen. I posed three options to fans:

  • Lay low
  • Join the Resistance asap
  • Enlist with the Red Hats

But leave it to the very intelligent fans of COLONY to provide much more creative options. Consider the following ideas shared by fans!

What can I say?  COLONY fans cannot be limited to a mere 3 choices. They are too smart for that!
Complex scenarios and really tough choices already have viewers engaged in COLONY, even ahead of its official premiere this Thursday, January 14th, on USA Network.  Thank you Carlton Cuse, Ryan Condal, cast and crew for giving us such a complex story to sink our teeth into!  Fans are ready to immerse themselves in the mystery and intrigue of COLONY.

COLONY: Learn the lingo

Red Hats? Green Zone? What are those things? USA Network’s new series, COLONY, has some vocabulary unique to its story. You will want to be well-versed in the COLONY lingo in order to get the most from the storyline.
Now you could be like me and watch the pilot early On Demand, multiple times, with subtitles to catch each word. Or, you can visit the tutorial at ColonyTV.com, the show’s interactive website. Or, you can read on and get a crash course here. Even better, do all three!
Here are several terms as I have come to understand them:

  • Colonists – residents living in the recently occupied Los Angeles under some oppressive conditions
  • Hosts – the unknown group that has taken over Los Angeles
  • Transitional Authority – a mysterious governing body administering the plans of the even more mysterious “hosts” who have taken over Los Angeles
  • Red Hats – the militia that enforces the laws and demands of the Transitional Authority
  • Collaborate – work with and support the Transitional Authority
  • Resist – clandestinely work against the Transitional Authority in hopes of taking back Los Angeles
  • Bloc – That’s right, there is no “k”s in these of blocs, which are different geographical regions divided by ginormous, impenetrable walls. i.e. Los Angeles bloc and Santa Monica bloc. Colonists are NOT allowed to move freely between blocs.
  • Flats – These are the housing areas for the Colonists, much less affluent than the Green Zone areas.
  • Green Zone – This is the much more affluent area inhabitanted by the Transitional Aurhority and its associates.

  • Drones – provide additional remote surveillance
  • Proxy – The Transitional Authority’s designated leader over a particular bloc. i.e. Proxy Alan Snyder governs the Los Angeles Bloc
  • The Factory – an ominous location where people are threatened to be sent
  • Exclusion Zone – areas between blocs, which are only accessible under highly regulated procedures

I hope this helps prepare you for your COLONY viewing. And I would love to hear your comments!

Colony: Calling all fans of The Walking Dead

I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead.  I am also very excited about Colony, a new series on USA Network.  The show officially premieres on January 14th, but the show is making the pilot available early for fans.  Learn more here.
Having watched the pilot already myself, I have compiled a list of reasons other fans of The Walking Dead should also give Colony a try.

  • The Walking Dead is on hiatus.  Fans need something to fill that void.  The 1/14/16 premiere of Colony is perfect timing.
  • Former cast member of The Walking Dead, Sarah Wayne Callies, stars in Colony.  As you know, Sarah Wayne Callies played Lori Grimes on The Walking Dead.  Interestingly, she is again playing a mom under the pressures of dire circumstances, but definitely not the same way she played Lori.

  • Speaking of dire circumstances, the citizens of Los Angeles are under a state of occupation.  Their world has changed drastically.  Much like The Walking Dead, old rules no longer apply.
  • U.S. currency is no longer worth more than kindling.  The Colonists receive rations and have taken to a system of bartering to obtain other items. The survivors in The Walking Dead are not shopping with Benjamins either.
  • Danger lurks.  Walkers as well as other humans are ongoing threats in The Walking Dead. Most Colonists live in fear of the Transitional Authority, a somewhat mysterious governing body serving the even more mysterious “hosts”. There is also the threat of being sent to an ominous place called the “factory”.
  • The brave fight against the evil. While some survivors in The Walking Dead selfishly choose to only look after themselves, there are those like Rick Grimes who risk their lives to protect others. In the newly occupied Los Angeles we learn of a group called “The Resistance” that refuses to take the occupation lying down.
  • It is not safe to go out after dark. In The Walking Dead, darkness increases your vulnerability to walkers. In Colony, there is a curfew that is enforced.  The threat of punishment for those found outside their homes after curfew is taken very seriously.

  • There are very hard choices to be made. The Colonists are challenged with choosing to collaborate or resist.  Your loyalties can impact the safety and well-being of your family. The Walking Dead survivors are also challenged with not knowing who they can trust and how new alliances could impact their loved ones.
  • Action, action, action.  By far, neither show is a snooze fest.

So, what do you think?  Are you a fan of The Walking Dead?  Do you see some common themes with Colony that interest you?  Check it out and let me know!
